Step by Step Methods

    Line and 18cm/7in square cake tin with greased baking paper, using a sharp knife, chop the dates. Finely chop the cashew nuts.

    Put the butter in a saucepan with the condensed milk . Stir over a gentle heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is well combined.

    Stir the dates, cashews, pistachios, almonds and half the coconut into the pan. Mix well, then spoon into the pan. Mix well, then spoon into the greased cake tin. Press down well. Sprinkle with remaining coconut. Chill for 2 hours, or until required . Cut into 16 squares and serve at once.

Tips & variations

  • Packets of dates are sold in most supermarkets and delicatessens. Unlike many other dried fruits, they do not need any soaking before use.

  • To make a special home-made gift, roll the date squares in extra desiccated coconut at the end of step 3 . Pack the squares in a gift box and decorate with a colorful ribbon.

  • To very the flavor, rep'ace the cashews with ready- chopped walnuts. Decorate the chilled squares with grated plain chocolate instead of the desiccated coconut.

  • These tasty treats make a fabulous teatime treat. You can also serve them with cups of black coffee at the end of a special meal.
